Next month we’ll be releasing our next publication – and the first under our new imprint, Dik-Dik Editions.

If PRONK is a publishing house (a tiny publishing house ~ cottage? croft ~ admittedly) then Dik-Dik Editions is the shed out at the back where we’re experimenting, tinkering, playing and making ink-stained mischief with collaborators – including zines, posters, broadsides and boekies.

Yes, boekies!

It’s taken us a while to settle on “boekie” (which in Afrikaans literally means “small book”) as a term for this kind of publication. Boekie‘s possibly boerekitsch undertones puts the word dangerously close to cringe and yet we still find it much more palatable than “pamphlet” (which makes one think of the free brochures displayed at a provincial town’s reluctantly-open tourism office) or “chapbook” (American! Ewww!) or “booklet” (more suitable for a print-at-home first aid manual).

Top Bill(ing)

The first Dik-Dik Editions boekie is a captivating, bone-chilling and very amusing essay by the historian Bill Nasson titled Comrades and Cannibals in Oxford. It is designed by the book designer and visual artist Gabrielle Guy.

After reviewing three different samples, each with a different paper stock and ink, we settled on printing this 24-page beauty in vivid cyan ink on Creamy Bulky paper (the same paper used in the interior of the South African paperback edition of PRONK’s first title, The President).

Bill’s boekie will launch at 4pm on Saturday 22 August 2026 in Cape Town with an introductory price of just R75 per copy… the price of a 100g pack of trail mix from Woolies, fyi! (A steal for something at least twice as delicious.)

Comrades will be stocked at select bookshops in South Africa and at the PRONK Ateljee. It will later be made available to the US market.
