  • One year on

Over at his newsletter, a swimming pool library, PRONK’s publisher reflects on a year of publishing (and what comes next):

It’s been a little over a year since the first launch, in Cape Town, of the Artist Edition of my novel, The President – a hand-made kettle-stitched beauty that comes with a Brett Murray print and is raising funds for the Pride Shelter Trust.

I published The President because I thought it was a good enough story to share with the world, and because I wanted it to make some small contribution for good (so far, we’ve donated ZAR21,000 to the Pride Shelter). But/and also because I wanted to learn publishing by doing it.

For a very long time, my dream of being a publisher seemed like a pie-in-the-sky fantasy, an ambition always deferred beyond the horizon of the possible or probable. But, reading Amelia Greenhall’s Notes on Artist Publishing, attending art book fairs and zine fests, and interviewing publishers all nourished my sense of what is feasible, showing me the barriers to entering publishing were a lot lower than I thought, showing me I should just get on and do it! [Nick Mulgrew, the plucky visionary and blisteringly talented polymath behind uHlanga Press and Batis Books has very much been a print/publishing lodestar, too.]

And so The President – as the first title from my new little press, PRONK – has also been a pilot project, a trial run, a way of learning, iterating, making mistakes (and the occasional break-through) so that I’m better equipped when the time comes for PRONK to publish the work of others. I’ve come a long way in the last 12 months, though I know there is still much to learn.

As a nascent publisher, I’m interested both in creating beautiful, covetable, collectable books AND in making books that are affordable and widely accessible. (I’m also interested in the overlap between these two: in making affordable, beautiful books.) These divergent impulses meant that in addition to a second collectable limited-run edition of The President (the super-cute pocket hardback version that is currently only available from The Common Press in London), I’ve also released two “standard editions” of the novel that are much easier to get hold of in case you haven’t yet read it or would like to give a copy as a gift.

    The Standard Editions

    Paperback

The President is now available in paperback (ISBN: 9781967449033) from indie bookstores in the United States, as well as the usual online suspects (Bookshop.orgTertuliaBarnes & Noble and the Oligarchical Goliath That Shalt Not Be Named et al.).

    Elsewhere around the world:

    • AUSTRALIA: You can purchase it online from retailers including The Nile, Abbey’s and Booktopia
    • CANADA: Available from Amazon.ca
    • INDIA: Available from Amazon.in
    • SOUTH AMERICA: From online retailer Busca Libre

Next month, a new paperback edition for the South African market will be launching in June 2026 (ISBN: 9781049284132). Distributed by Bridge Books/Protea Boekehuis, it’ll be available for purchase from most South African bookstores. And, unlike the international paperback, IT HAS FRENCH FLAPS!

    Ebook

You can buy the ebook version (ISBN: 9781967449026) from your preferred e-reading platform from just about anywhere in the world (just search for “Xander Beattie, The President”).

If you’re in the USA and your public library uses Hoopla to lend out digital materials, you can borrow the ebook using that.

    What comes next?

My publishing ambitions are not so delusional that I’m aiming for PRONK to gain Penguin-sized market share or Bezos-level wealth. Instead, my hope is that publishing will be a creative practice, a craft – one that is financially sustainable (in other words, costs are covered). One that brings – in collaboration with others – things of beauty, meaning and worth into the world.

I want to publish books, sure, but also smaller, less ambitious, less time-hungry, resource-intensive things. Zines, pamphlets, broadsides and perhaps even the occasional poster. These might be riskier, more experimental – but also lower-stakes. An opportunity for low-cost, high-reward play and collaboration.

The new container for these publishing experiments I’ve christened Dik-Dik Editions. The imprint is named after a petite African antelope and I’m describing it as PRONK’s “publishing laboratory”. A container for more ink-stained “learning by doing”.

  • A Hollywood story

    The President lands in LA.

Author Xander Beattie in conversation with the writer Steven Tagle.

On 5 December, we launched the Collectable Pocket Hardback edition of The President in LA where the novel’s author Xander Beattie had a cosy (literal!) fireside chat with the marvellous poet and writer Steven Tagle (we’ll link to an edit of the convo between the two when it’s published). There was much conviviality (and pizza!) to be had.

We’re grateful to all who joined us in giving The President such a warm SoCal welcome (especially the event’s hosts, Trev and Shane) — and to Steven for being a terrific and thoughtful interlocutor.

Copies of the Collectable Pocket Hardback are currently available in PRONK’s seasonal US online shop as well as in the UK from The Common Press (both in-person at their London store and online).

[Update 23 January 2026: PRONK’s online shop has gone into hibernation. Copies of the Collectable Pocket Hardback are still available in the UK from The Common Press. In the USA, they can be purchased in-store at Green Apple Books on the Park in San Francisco and at Gallery Bookshop in Mendocino.]

  • A print-at-home Christmas present from PRONK

We made a gift zine for you! It features a little short story by The President’s author, Xander Beattie, called And the Hummingbird Beats Her Wings.

If you want to print it out using A4 paper, download this PDF.

If you want to print it out using US letter paper, download this PDF.

Once it’s printed out, fold the pages in half and — voila! — you’ll have your very own Xander Beattie zine.

  • Take note!

We love notebooks. If we leave the house without one, we feel naked and defenceless. Why? Because notebooks are sandboxes and launchpads and playgrounds and super-portable canvases. When paired with a pen or pencil, they help us to think, dream, problem-solve, escape and plan. We take them everywhere we go, filling them up with first drafts, brainstorms, lists, observations, reminders, doodles and more.

We love notebooks so much, in fact, that we decided to commission the creation of PRONK’s very own.

The first edition of the PRONK Notebook will soon be on sale in the United States. It is:

    • Portable and lightweight but, with 80 A5 pages, offers plenty of space for scribbling, sketching and plotting
    • Available both lined and unlined
    • Has a soft black cover, pink stitching and the PRONK logo on the back
    • Was handmade by PULP in Johannesburg

A handful of unlined PRONK Notebooks are also currently available for purchase in-store from The Common Press in Shoreditch, London.

  • Hello hardback: A London inauguration

Celebrating the arrival of a brand-new edition of The President in the UK.

The worldwide inauguration of The President’s Pocket Hardback Edition was held in London (UK) on Sunday 7 September 2025 at The Common Press Bookshop.

The evening was hosted by Dr Jaco Barnard-Naudé, legal professor, author, and winner of the Ingrid Jonker Prize for his debut poetry collection, om my kastele in Spanje te sloop.

With the Artist Edition of The President nearly sold out, this was the first time readers anywhere in the world had the opportunity to get their hands on the brand-new A6 pocket hardback. The Pocket Hardback was gorgeously printed and hand-bound by Pulp Paperworks in Johannesburg and published by PRONK.

Signed copies of the hardback are now available for purchase in person from The Common Press in Shoreditch for £20. It will soon be available for UK residents to purchase online.

Few places rival The Common Press went it comes to being a welcoming and comfortable place for literary conversation in London. Xander was interviewed by Jaco Barnard-Naude. Not only is Jaco a notable legal scholar; he is also a poet, and recently won the Ingrid Jonker prize for his debut poetry collection, om my kastele in Spanje te sloop.
  • At the Joburg Art Fair

The artist edition of The President (together with its accompanying Risograph print by Brett Murray, All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go) was showcased at the 2025 FNB Joburg Art Fair by our friends at PULP1. PULP’s booth was in the print-focused ETC section of the fair, which ran from 5 to 7 September 2025 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

As of late September 2025, there are only 24 copies left of the artist edition (and the fine art print by Brett which accompanies it) available; you can buy one in person at PULP or from its online store.

  • ‘The President’ comes to San Francisco

On 11 July, Et al. hosted the San Francisco launch of The President. Xander gave a reading, and then chatted about the novel with the fabulous SF-based speculative fiction writer and essayist Ploi Pirapokin.

We couldn’t have asked for a lovelier spot than Et al. for The President’s Californian inauguration. The high-ceilinged, white-walled gallery in the Mission has a lively calendar of readings, events, exhibitions etc. (Its bookshop has a terrific selection of mostly secondhand books1, too.) For a list of folks who have spoken there (Xander is in truly great company!), as well as ways to support, check out its website.

    1. As of this week, it also has three copies of The President available for purchase. ↩︎

  • Jozi! A homecoming story

The President is a globetrotting beast — set in Cape Town, written (mostly) in Skukuza, extensively revised in California and designed in Berlin. But, we’d argue that the book’s true “home” is arguably Johannesburg, where the first edition was printed and hand-bound by PULP Paperworks.

On 5 May, we hosted a little Jozi launch in PULP’s light and airy workspace.

The author was in conversation with GALA Queer Archive‘s Karin Tan. (Thanks for the lively convo, Karin!) As South Africa’s preeminent LGBT archive, GALA is doing vital (and vibrant) work with a publishing programme and a library that’s open to all.

PULP has copies of The President for sale; pop in to grab yours (and some stunning PULP stationery). Or order it from them online1.

If you weren’t able to join our Joburg or Cape Town launches, no fear! We’re hosting a virtual launch from 5-6pm SAST on Saturday 14 June 2025.  Here‘s where you can register.

    1. If you’re based in South Africa, that is. If you’re overseas, please contact us to arrange a copy to be posted to you. ↩︎

  • Once upon a time in Cape Town

Looked on by Brett Murray’s print All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go (and the gigantic painting of Brett’s upon which the print was based), The President had its first-ever launch at Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa.

The event was held on the evening of 30 April 2025.

    A full house!
